So, lately I've taken a plunge into reading a bit about our American History. In particular, I'm reading a book that was written to explain exactly what our Forefathers intended when they wrote the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
Forever and a day there has always been controversy about our government politicians and all the corrupt things they have/are doing. In reality, this will probably never end. But, I'm growing older and for some reason, I feel a larger sense of responsibility now in keeping myself educated and standing up for what I feel is right - regardless if it will make any difference or not.
O.K., so where is this all headed?? I'll keep my thoughts here simple...
All we ever hear about in the news is mumbo jumbo about the Health Care Reform Bill. Alright, in reality we've probably been so inundated with talk about this, that some who used to care may have actually stopped caring at all. And if you, like me, are sick and tired of hearing about this... than by all means, google something else for a moment.
I think everyone can agree that spending has gotten out of control. Way out of control. You'd be silly to not agree that taxation is getting completely out of control. (Not that long ago I saw on the news that the Death Tax for those that have accumulated over $600,000 of estate, is like 40% or something like that... that's almost 1/2 of what someone has worked for their entire life... blood, sweat, and tears... will be taxed to the Government, and not to their children. Sucky if you ask me!) I'm sure I could go on, and I'm sure that most would agree with me.
But, here's the interesting facts I have for you:
In the book I'm reading, The 5,000 Year Leap, it very simply lines out something that our Forefathers warned us against.
And I quote,"They warned against the "welfare state" where the government endeavors to take care of everyone from the cradle to the grave." (p. 29) Hmmm... sound a bit like the Health Care Bill??
Furthermore, Thomas Jefferson is cited, "If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people, under the pretense of taking care of them, they must become happy." (p. 29)
And just after that it states, "They warned us against confiscatory taxation and deficit spending. Jefferson said it was immoral for one generation to pass on the results of it's extravagance in the form of debts to the next generation." (p. 29-30)
So, in my simple minded opinion, I feel that it is wrong for the Federal Government to try and pass this Nation wide Health Care Bill and should stop trying to take responsibility for every one's health care. Or every one's problem for that matter. Why not keep it at the State level, where things like this should reside? "The idea was to keep the power base close to the people. The emphasis was on strong local self-government. The states would be responsible for internal affairs and the federal government would confine itself to those areas which could not be fairly or effectively handled by the individual state." (p. 23)
**I know that this is probably not cited to professional standards, but I'm just wanting to get my thoughts out, and this in not intended to be a professional publication.**
